Intro to Singapore – Our first week…

Filed under: the beginning — Shirley @ 2:37 am

Hi All,

Well, we made it and got through the first week. It took a bit to get off the ground at Dulles due to some mechanical problems. We were stuck for just shy of 2 1/2 hours. But once we got airborne it was a go. We were able to make up some of the time through our connection in Japan and was only about an hour late coming in to Singapore.

We’re here at the Fraser Suites, which is a serviced residence. Nice, I don’t have to make the beds or clean the bathrooms :) It’s a mini one-bedroom apartment with washer and dryer so actually the other day it felt like “home” since I needed to do some ironing. Nothing like ironing to make you know you’re domestic.

I’m afraid that I don’t have any pictures to show you yet. I can’t download them to my laptop because the plugs are all different and my laptop doesn’t have a lot of charge to sit and wait for the camera to download the pics, not because of the different plugs! I’m writing from the computers in the business center. Nice to have and convenient to use but not the same.

We’ve been assigned our apartment. They needed to get approval for the rent because it was higher than the allotment but it’s a go. Now the landlord will get it ready for occupancy, paint, clean, etc. We have this temporary apartment til Oct 24th so we may need to stay here til then. But I shouldn’t complain since once we move to the permanent quarters… the maid service turns to ME :)

Just wanted to say, “Hello!” to everyone for now. I miss you all. I will post another blog entry with more interesting news of our first week. We did do quite a bit over the weekend.

More to come… check back…

  1. Glad you’re there in one piece and getting settled. Is Becky renting your house? We missed you at the BWI race on Sunday. Had 340 finishers with winning time of 21:28 (4 miles). Ronnie Wong won age group…he’s glad Mick’s gone! Robin won her age group also. They said some nice things about my 21 year tenure supporting this race.

We expect to close on AZ home 1st week in December. Going to Napa on 10/11 for weekend, then AZ for a week to check on progress, meet with decorator, pool folks, landscaper, audio guys…all fun stuff!

Enjoy the other side of the world! Know that we miss you both. Love ya’

  2. I’m glad to see your blog is up and running and happy to know that someone is making your bed for you. It’s too much stress to change time zones and then have to bother with folding towels! I’m looking forward to hearing about your adventures. Hi Mick!.

  3. I’m so glad you made it there okay. How awful to have a delay at the beginning of such a long journey. Can’t wait to hear more!

  4. Weather has cooled off a bit and the water is flat – great for rowing! Miss seeing your funky oars next to mine at the boathouse. Dru

  5. I miss you!!!! …and of course I wish for that maid service myself! How’s the weather??
Linda and I got our oars (finally!) and I am very excited to try them out. Yet, the stroke seat to guide me through will be missing.
Just got back from my ortho weekend in N.Y. and I am fighting to keep my eyes open. Nothing new, I guess?!
More later. Have to go back to work.
    :-) Alex
P.S. Can’t wait to see the first pictures..

  6. Really interesting stuff. I’m a skimmer, so I’m not reading every word (Ann probably will), but it seems like a years worth of experience so far. Very beautiful looking country, different than I might have imagined. Be well.
